The Words You Use Become Your Child’s Identity

By Alex Lesage

Kids don’t just hear what we say. They build themselves around it.

“You’re too sensitive.” “You’re too much.” “Why can’t you just act normal?”

Those don’t land as corrections. They land as definitions.

Because kids don’t have the filter yet to separate behavior from identity. So when they hear those things enough… they stop thinking “I’m having a hard moment” and start believing “There’s something wrong with me.”

That shift is where the damage starts. Not loud. Not immediate. But deep.

Because once they stop trusting their own internal signals… they stop listening to themselves. They question what they feel. They doubt what they need. They override their own limits to fit expectations.

The goal isn’t to ignore behavior. It’s to separate the behavior from the person. Correct the moment. But protect the identity.

Because the words you use today… become the voice they carry later.

No Shame. No Pity. No Cure Needed. Alex
