Stop Asking “Why” and Start Asking This Instead

Share (If You Like):

One question shows up a lot in parenting: “Why are they acting like this?”

It makes sense. You’re trying to understand. You’re trying to fix it.

But most of the time… that question doesn’t get you very far. Because in the moment, there isn’t always a clear “why.”

So instead of asking: “Why are they acting like this?”
Ask: “What might be overwhelming them right now?”

Same behavior. Different lens. One looks for blame. The other looks for pressure.

And when you start looking for pressure… you start seeing things differently. The noise. The expectations. The transitions. The build-up that didn’t get noticed.

That shift changes how you respond. Less reaction. More understanding. Less escalation. More support. Same moment. Completely different outcome.

No Shame. No Pity. No Cure Needed. Alex
