MYTH vs TRUTH: Calm Parenting

By Alex Lesage

MYTH: Good parenting is calm parenting.
TRUTAº Good parenting is regulated parenting; that includes repair.

Calm is a goal, not a personality trait.
It’s not a badge you wear. It’s not a mood you’re supposed to maintain 24/7.
And if you’re parenting a neurodivergent child?
You’re going to lose your patience sometimes. Period.

You will get overwhelmed.
You will raise your voice.
You will snap at a moment that didn’t deserve it.
Because you’re human; and parenting like this is relentless.

When every day is unpredictable…
When sensory overload meets your own sleep-deprivation…
When you’re not just a parent, but a case manager, advocate, therapist, and regulator?

Yeah, you’re going to run out of steam.
That’s not a failure. That’s reality.

But here’s where the truth kicks in:
Regulation isn’t about being calm all the time.
It’s about how you come back.
How you repair.
How you model that emotions don’t make you unsafe, and that reconnecting after rupture is part of the relationship.

You’re not a bad parent because you lost your shit.
You’re a real parent doing impossible work, and showing your child what it means to come back from hard moments with love.

Calm is optional.
Regulated is everything.
