Myth:
“If you take out the dyes; the gluten; the sugar…
If you do enough gut cleanses and food purges;
You can cure autism.”
Truth:
Autism isn’t caused by Cheetos.
It’s not a food reaction.
It’s not a bug you flush out with kale.
It’s wiring.
And that wiring doesn’t change just because you swapped out their mac and cheese.
The kids in these stories didn’t get “cured.”
They got better at masking.
They adapted.
They learned to survive their parents’ obsession with “fixing” them.
That’s not healing.
That’s trauma dressed up as progress.
You can also add facts:
A better diet can ease symptoms.
It can improve energy; focus; digestion; of course.
That’s true for everyone — neurodivergent or neurotypical.
But that doesn’t mean it changed the autism.
It just means the kid feels better; like anyone would when they’re not bloated; overstimulated; or in pain.
Saying you “cured autism” with diet is like saying cutting out bread cured someone’s bad personality.
It’s not science. It’s fantasy.
And when you claim a cure where there is none; you put pressure on other parents.
You pile shame on kids who are already doing the best they can.
Bottom line:
Your kid doesn’t need to be cured.
They need to be understood.
Supported.
Protected from myths like these.
Feed your kid well — for the right reasons.
Give them tools that work for them.
But don’t chase a lie that turns their wiring into a fault line.
Because while you’re chasing a cure…
Your kid’s just trying to breathe.
And you’re not helping.
No shame. No pity. No cure needed.
