Myth VS Truth: They’re just being difficult.

By Alex Lesage

MYTH: They’re just being difficult.
TRUTH: They’re struggling to regulate; behavior is communication.

Meltdowns; shutdowns; resistance.
Not “bad behavior”; it’s a nervous system screaming, “I can’t hold it together right now.”

Kids on the spectrum aren’t pushing buttons;,
they’re surviving overload, confusion, or emotional chaos with a brain still learning how to cope.

What looks like defiance might be panic.
What sounds like rudeness might be exhaustion.
What feels like attitude might be fear.

Before you correct the behavior, ask yourself:
What is my child trying to tell me right now?

Because every reaction has a root.
And every meltdown is a moment that needs understanding; not punishment.

No shame. No pity. No Cure Needed.
