Myth vs Truth: The Meltdown One

By Alex Lesage

MYTH: A meltdown is just bad behavior.
TRUTH: It’s a nervous system in full overload.

It’s not defiance.
It’s not manipulation.
It’s not them “trying to get their way.”

It’s panic.
It’s pain.
It’s too loud, too fast, too much — all at once.

And it’s your job — not to control it…
…but to understand it.
To ground it.
To create safety in the storm.

This doesn’t mean letting your kid run wild.
It means seeing the meltdown for what it is:
A distress signal, not a discipline problem.

They don’t need punishment.
They need connection.
They need co-regulation.
They need someone who isn’t scared of their hard moments.

Be that person.
