Yes.

It’s More Common Than People Think

• Sensory experience

• Difficulty with transitions
• Fluctuating focus
• Overwhelm under pressure
• Social challenges

That overlap is what creates confusion.

Where They Differ

Even though they overlap…

they’re not the same.

• ADHD leans toward difficulty regulating attention and impulses
• Autism leans toward differences in processing, communication, and predictability

But those differences can exist in the same child.

At the same time.

It’s Called Co-Occurring

When both are present…

it’s not one causing the other.

It’s two patterns co-existing.

Each one influencing how the child experiences the world.

You might explain:

• The attention shifts

But miss:

• The sensory load
• The need for predictability

Or the other way around.

• Strong focus in some moments… and none in others

It doesn’t always fit clean categories.

Diagnosis Can Reflect Both

This used to be more restricted.

Now it’s recognized:

A child can meet criteria for both autism and ADHD.

And many do.

“Which one is it?”

Ask:

“What patterns are showing up… and how do they interact?”

That gives you a more accurate picture.
