Why Does My Child Seem Fine One Moment and Not the Next?

By Alex Lesage

This one throws people off fast.

They’re okay.

Calm. Engaged. Doing fine.

Then suddenly…

they’re not.

Irritated. Overwhelmed. Shutting down or exploding.

And it feels like it came out of nowhere.

It’s Not Random

It looks sudden.

But it’s not.

What you’re seeing is a state shift.

Not a personality change.

Not a decision.

A change in what the system can handle in that moment.

The System Has a Threshold

Every nervous system has a limit.

A point where input becomes too much.

Before that point:

Things look stable.

After that point:

Access drops.

What Builds Underneath

The shift doesn’t start when you see it.

It starts earlier.

Small things stacking:

  • Noise
  • Demands
  • Transitions
  • Social pressure
  • Effort to stay regulated

Each one manageable on its own.

Together?

They fill the system.

The “Fine” Was Effort

This is the part that gets missed.

When your child looks fine…

they may be working to stay that way.

Holding it together.

Managing input.

Pushing through.

So what you’re seeing isn’t:

“No stress.”

It’s:

“Stress being managed.”

Then the Line Gets Crossed

At a certain point…

the system runs out of room.

And when that happens:

  • Patience drops
  • Flexibility drops
  • Emotional control drops

Not gradually.

Quickly.

Why It Feels Instant

Because you don’t see the buildup.

You see the tipping point.

One small thing happens:

A request.
A noise.
A transition.

And it flips.

But that moment wasn’t the cause.

It was the final layer.

Access Changes Fast

This is the core of it.

A child can have the ability…

and lose access to it quickly when the system is loaded.

So it becomes:

“They were just fine a second ago…”

Yes.

And now the system is over capacity.

It’s Not Inconsistency

It’s not:

“They can do it sometimes and choose not to other times.”

It’s:

Access fluctuates with state.

Same child.

Same skills.

Different level of load.

The Shift That Helps

Instead of asking:

“What just happened?”

Ask:

“What was building before this?”

That’s where the pattern shows up.

Final Thought

Your child didn’t change in a second.

Their capacity did.

And when you understand that…

those sudden shifts stop looking random…

and start making sense.

No Shame. No Pity. No Cure Needed.
